There have been several postings regarding the restrooms at the Route 66 Trailhead which connects to the Pacific Electric Trail. The following information has been provided by the City which addresses the opening of the restroom facility. If you should have any additional questions, please contact Linda Daniels at Linda.Daniels@cityofrc.us or by calling at 909-477-2700.
During construction of the Route 66 Trail head a significant amount of vandalism occurred to the restroom building. This caused concern regarding the opening of the restroom, and the financial impacts of continued vandalism and repairs to the restroom facility. During this past 60 days, the vandalism has decreased, however there is still an issue with graffiti.
The City and its contractor are working on the final improvements for the Trailhead currently, and the project is scheduled to be accepted by the City Council at their July 18th meeting. Once the improvements are accepted, the restrooms can be opened and this is being scheduled to occur before the end of July. The restrooms are planned to be available during daylight hours.
The fiscal impact of the vandalism that occurred during construction is one of the reasons the City has been waiting for the improvements to be complete, and accepted. On a go-forward basis, continued access to the restrooms will depend on the care of the fixtures and furnishings by the users as there are limited funds for maintenance and repairs, particularly if we experience high amounts of vandalism.
One of the comments posted also referred to the trees that have been recently planted along the Trail as being a nice amenity. The City was able to provide the trees as a result of a special one-time grant that was received. Those grant funds are specifically for planting trees in areas without them, and the funds cannot be used for other types of trail improvements.
